Strengthening Local Governance

UNITAR’s Learning Platform on Human Mobility

UNITAR’s Learning Platform on Human Mobility provides capacity development through a blended learning approach on all aspects of human mobility, designed specifically for local and regional authorities.

In November 2015, in Quito, a course on Migration and Post 2015 will take place on the sidelines of the Second Mayoral Forum on Mobility, Migration and Development for municipal administrators.  This Course is funded by the World Bank KNOMAD project.

Based on prior consultations (more information), the Learning Platform’s areas for course-work are currently:

  • Social cohesion & adapting to change (read more)
  • Fostering economic development & entrepreneurship (read more)
  • Education & youth development
  • Urbanisation & the environment
  • Access to public services including health
  • Human security (read more

The course work draws from practical experience and an existing body of knowledge developed by partners including: IOM and EC-UN Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI) and the World Bank’s Knowledge Partnership on Migration KNOMAD (LINK). Other important players within and outside of the UN system include UNDP; the ACP Observatory on Migration; UNICEF; UNU Barcelona; the European Commission; the University of Antwerp (CeMIS); the City University of New York (CUNY); Erasmus University Rotterdam; the South African Migration Project (SAMP); the University of Sussex (“Migrating out of Poverty” Consortium); Payoke; Storytegic; OSCE; UNODC; and the Cities of Atlanta, Antwerp, Athens, Barcelona, Dakar, Durban, Jeju (more information), New York (Blueprints for Immigrant Integration), Plock (more information), Quito, and Seoul. 


The Learning Platform borrows from existing UNITAR methodologies drawing from the well-established global network of CIFAL Training Centres
