Japan-Latin America Forum 2010

UNITAR Japan Latin America Forum

In light of the ever-growing importance of the relationship between Japan and Latin America, coupled with an increased international understanding of the necessity of multilateral interaction to address the challenges of environmental sustainability, the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Hiroshima Office sought to provide a venue to exchange knowledge and best practices among public officials and key decision makers from both

The delegates, representatives from Ministries and from the industrial sectors of both Latin America and Japan, examined, inter alia, Clean Energy and Clean Production, as well as Carbon Markets. This Forum benefitted from collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MoEJ), the Ministry of Economy, trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Group of Latin America and Caribbean (GRULAC) Ambassadors in Tokyo.

Learning Objectives

  • To fill the gap in the interaction between Latin America and Japan in this field.
  • To create a network between Latin American officials and their Japanese counterparts.
  • To encourage a flow of knowledge and skills to build capacity in Latin America.
  • To promote the exchange of knowledge and technology on issues related to Climate Change and industrial sector environmental sustainability practices.

The Forum consisted of a two-day international gathering held in Tokyo, Japan, between November 18 and 20, 2010. This multilateral exchange comprised interactive lectures and discussion panels and was augmented by an additional day-long Study Visit, for the Ministers and Vice-Ministers attending from Latin America, to Sanyo Corporation’s Solar Ark to discuss state-of-the-art renewable energy technology. This Forum was organised with financial support from the UNITAR Hiroshima Office and the Andean Development Corporation.
