UNITAR Hiroshima South Sudan Fellowship on Entrepreneurship and Project Planning

South Sudan, the world's newest nation, is faced with an array of challenging issues which are undermining sustainable development and recovery. In this context, the UNITAR Hiroshima Office launched a training programme to support South Sudan in promoting indigenous capacity development.

Launched in 2015 with the financial support of the Government and People of Japan as an annual programme, the UNITAR Hiroshima South Sudan Fellowship on Entrepreneurship and Project Planning (hereafter called “the programme”) is tailored for junior-to-mid career level professionals from the government, civil society organizations, private sector, media organizations, and academic institutions of the Republic of South Sudan. The programme is a six-month-long training which focuses on needs assessment, project planning, leadership, and entrepreneurship skills, aiming to build the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for effective project management and leadership.

The programme consists of four workshops, held in Juba (South Sudan), Entebbe (Uganda), and Hiroshima (Japan) through which each Fellow learns to identify local needs and national priorities, design project proposal and entrepreneurial responses to address such needs. A special emphasis is placed on methodology and skills development related to leadership and mentoring. The programme aims to develop the capacity of each individual Fellow to be a leader, able to contribute to organizational change within his/her respective ministry or organization.

The programme, conducted with the institutional support of the Government of South Sudan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, South Sudan serves as the political focal point for the programme and the Ministry of Labour, Public Service and Human Resource Development, South Sudan remains as the operational focal point. The inaugural cycle of the Fellowship was officially launched on 22 September 2015 and was successfully completed on 31 March 2016.
